I think everybody should look at their life as a pie chart. Slices for areas. Some maybe bigger than others. Some merely slivers. And the sizes will change at different points in your life. But you want there to be a lot of slices. Not too many little slivers…but you don’t want it divided into thirds, either. Work. Family. Money. That’s….not really diversified.
Think about what your pie chart looks like right now. Are all the areas of your life there? Which pieces are bigger? Why are they bigger? What slices are missing completely?
Is there a slice for religion or spirituality? Exercise or physical activity? Creativity or artistic pursuits?
At certain times of the year, certain slices get bigger. When I’m training for the marathon, the running/swimming/exercise slice gets bigger, for example. And certain years have had other areas be more prominent, too.
This is an interesting question to ask someone. To ask them to divide up their life into a pie chart for you. You’ll learn what they value by what’s included. And you’ll learn what areas they don’t value or completely neglect by what’s missing. It will reveal more than you know…
